Manu Rishi Temple in Old Manali honours Rishi Manu, the sage associated with the town's name. The traditional explanation traces Manali to Manu-Alaya, meaning the abode of Rishi Manu. A visit gives that familiar place name a religious context, beyond the cafés and shops that many guests first associate with Old Manali.
The temple is a place of worship. Its stone walls, timber work and projecting roofs are also worth looking at, but allow people who have come to pray space to do so.
Manu-Alaya and the flood tradition
In Hindu tradition, Rishi Manu is associated with the renewal of human life after a great flood. The story told about Manali places his arrival from a boat and the establishment of his dwelling here. That dwelling, or abode, is the connection expressed in the name Manu-Alaya.
Rishi Manu is also traditionally associated with the Manusmriti. The temple's dedication and the story of Manu-Alaya connect a visit here with both the sage and the name of the town.
Timber details beneath the temple's roofs
From outside, look at how the broad roofs extend beyond the walls. The view from below reveals the wooden undersides, supporting brackets and repeated rows of small wooden pendants along the eaves. These details can be easy to miss when looking only at the building's outline against the sky.
Notice the contrast between the pale stonework and the darker timber. Follow a wooden support up to the roof above it, then look along the roof edge to see the repeated decoration. You can appreciate these exterior details without making a photograph of the inner shrine.
Ask before photographing worship, the shrine or another visitor. Follow the directions at the temple for footwear, entry and cameras rather than assuming that being able to photograph the exterior means every part is open to photography.
Visiting Manu Rishi Temple in Old Manali
If you want to visit the temple, make it your destination rather than assuming you will reach it while browsing the first village shops. Our Mall Road to Old Manali article explains the difference between stopping in the lower village and continuing to the temple. Check the approach from your own stay before setting out.
Hadimba Devi Temple in Dhungri is a separate place of worship, dedicated to Hadimba Devi. It is not another name for Manu Rishi Temple or a stop you must pass on the way here. Plan the approach to each temple separately.
