The Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery in Naggar is worth setting aside time for if you enjoy paintings, old homes and looking closely at the places where people worked. Himalayan landscapes by Nicholas Roerich share the family house with paintings by his son Svetoslav. The visit is as much about the home as the art, though you cannot walk into every room.

Allow one to two hours at the estate, depending on how long you like to spend with the paintings and displays. From Manali, keep half a day free for the visit and return journey. If your group would rather spend that time on an outdoor walk, there is no need to add the gallery just to complete a sightseeing list.

The paintings and the house

The art gallery occupies the ground floor of the Roerich Memorial House. Two halls display Nicholas Roerich's Himalayan series, while a third holds Svetoslav's paintings. These were once working rooms, including the studio and studies, which gives the art a connection to the house around it.

Upstairs, the experience is different. You view the memorial rooms through their windows from the balcony, rather than entering them. Knowing this before you arrive helps: this is not a house tour where every room is open to wander through.

Ask at the entrance which displays are available that day, particularly if there is something you have travelled specifically to see. Leave a little room in your plans to linger.

Choose your visiting day

The estate closes on Mondays. Its holiday closures include Republic Day, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Christmas, Holi and Diwali. For an October trip, remember that 2 October is a closed day, even if the rest of your holiday plans are in place.

  • April to October: 10am to 6pm; ticket counter closes at 5.30pm.
  • November to March: 10am to 5pm; ticket counter closes at 4.30pm.
  • Lunch break: 1pm to 1.30pm.

A morning visit gives you time before lunch. For an afternoon outing, aim for after 1.30pm and leave enough time before the counter shuts.

As of 10 September 2026, admission is ₹100 for Indian visitors, ₹300 for foreign visitors and ₹30 for children. Confirm the applicable child ticket at the counter. Before travelling, check the estate's visiting information for any changes to charges or opening arrangements.

Getting there from Manali

Set your destination to Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery on Pulag Road, Naggar, not simply Naggar town.

From Manali Bus Stand in Siyal, the drive via NH3 and Patlikuhl is about 24 km. At Patlikuhl, take the road towards Naggar, then continue through Naggar towards the gallery on Pulag Road. Allow 60 to 90 minutes each way in ordinary conditions. Your hotel's location, traffic, rain or roadworks can lengthen the journey, so this is not a fixed arrival time.

Arrange your return pickup when booking a car, including how long the driver will wait. If you plan to use local buses, confirm both the outward service and your return before leaving; do not build the afternoon around an old last-bus time. You will also need to arrange the final approach to the estate from your bus stop.

Naggar Castle is a separate attraction. A gallery visit should not depend on being able to enter the castle, and this outing does not include a castle stop.

A comfortable, considerate visit

A stone-paved path leads from the entrance towards the house, but do not assume the whole visit is step-free. If anyone in your group needs a short approach or cannot manage steps, contact the estate about the drop-off point and accessible areas before setting out. Wear shoes you are comfortable walking in, and bring a rain layer if showers are expected.

Photography and video are not allowed inside the art gallery. Ask staff where photographs are permitted elsewhere in the estate and whether a separate charge applies. Keep clear of restricted areas and avoid touching the objects on display.

Check the weather and local road conditions before the drive, especially after heavy rain. If access is disrupted, leave the visit for another day rather than trying an unfamiliar shortcut.
